Germany Opportunity Card 2026: A Practical Guide for Indian Professionals

Germany's Chancenkarte lets you search for qualified work in Germany for up to a year. Here is who qualifies, what it costs and how to switch to a work visa.

Berlin skyline with the TV Tower and the Brandenburg Gate

You have six or seven years of solid experience in Pune, Bengaluru or Hyderabad. A former colleague moved to Munich and keeps telling you to try. You open job portals in Germany, see "work permit required" and close the tab. Can you go first and find the job once you are there?

That is what Germany's Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is for. It replaced the old six-month jobseeker visa with a card that lets you live in Germany and look for qualified work for up to one year. It works only if you plan the money, the paperwork and the search properly.

Last checked: 8 October 2026.

Who qualifies for the Opportunity Card

Route 1: fully recognised qualification

If your foreign degree or vocational qualification is fully recognised in Germany, you are treated as a skilled worker. You skip the points system and need no language certificate, although German is still recommended for finding work.

Route 2: the points system

If your qualification is not fully recognised, you can apply through points. You must first meet three basic conditions.

  • A university degree, or a vocational qualification of at least two years, recognised by the state where you earned it.
  • German at CEFR level A1, or English at CEFR level B2.
  • Enough money to support yourself during the search.

On top of that, you need at least 6 points.

How the points system works

Every claim needs documentary proof.

  • Partial recognition of your qualification in Germany: 4 points.
  • Qualification in a shortage occupation: 1 point.
  • Work experience after qualifying: 2 points for at least 2 years in the last 5, or 3 points for at least 5 years in the last 7.
  • German: 1 point for A2, 2 for B1, 3 for B2 or higher.
  • English at C1 or above: 1 point.
  • Age: 2 points up to the day you turn 35, 1 point between 35 and 40.
  • Previous legal stay in Germany of at least 6 continuous months in the last 5 years (not tourism): 1 point.
  • A spouse or partner who also meets the requirements: 1 point.

As an illustrative example, take a hypothetical 31-year-old software engineer with six years of experience, English at C1 and German at A2. Age gives 2 points, experience 3, English 1 and German 1. That is 7 points. Run your own numbers in the official Make it in Germany self-check first.

Proof of funds and the paperwork from India

For 2026, you must show at least €1,091 net per month for your job search. The usual proof is a blocked account (Sperrkonto) or a formal declaration of commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) from someone in Germany. Indian missions also mention return flight funds. As a simple calculation, a full year at €1,091 a month comes to €13,092.

The German missions in India list these documents, among others:

  • A passport issued within the last 10 years.
  • The VIDEX application form, printed and signed.
  • Proof of accommodation in Germany.
  • Degree certificates and employer confirmations.
  • A signed motivation letter covering the work you want, your German learning, applications you have made and why Germany.
  • Health insurance starting on your travel date.

You apply through the Federal Foreign Office's Consular Services Portal and bring originals to your appointment. Incomplete documents or untrue statements can lead to rejection.

Working while you search, and moving to a work visa

On the card you may take part-time jobs totalling up to 20 hours a week, plus trial work of up to two weeks per employer aimed at qualified employment.

Once you have a qualifying offer, apply to your local foreigners authority (Ausländerbehörde) for the right residence permit. If your job counts as qualified employment but no other permit fits yet, the Opportunity Card can be extended for up to two years.

The 2026 EU Blue Card salary thresholds are:

  • €50,700 gross a year for the standard Blue Card.
  • €45,934.20 gross a year for shortage occupations, IT professionals and graduates whose degree is no more than three years old.

Bonuses only count if they carry no conditions such as sales targets. Blue Card holders can apply for permanent settlement after 27 months with A1 German, or 21 months with B1. Below the Blue Card level, the skilled worker permit is the alternative. If you are 45 or older and applying for your first German work permit, you need at least €55,770 in 2026 or proof of adequate retirement provision.

Recognition and language: anabin, ZAB and German

anabin is the German database of foreign institutions and degrees. You need your university rated "H+" and your degree rated as corresponding or equivalent. If your degree is not listed, you need a Statement of Comparability from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB). The German missions in India list a ZAB confirmation as mandatory for the points route, and the Make it in Germany portal says processing can take several months. Start early.

  • English B2 can be shown through IELTS or TOEFL, for example. The German missions in India do not accept Pearson certificates.
  • German A1 must come from Goethe-Institut, telc or ÖSD.

Realistic job search tips and common mistakes

  • Start applying from India. Your motivation letter needs this evidence anyway.
  • Keep learning German. B1 German helps even in English-speaking teams.
  • Network deliberately. Former colleagues, alumni groups and LinkedIn conversations with hiring managers often move faster than cold applications.
  • Know your number. Research local pay for your role and city so you can tell whether an offer clears the Blue Card threshold.

Our personal career readiness plan template helps you set weekly targets for applications and interviews. Common mistakes to avoid:

  • Assuming your degree is recognised without checking anabin.
  • Leaving the ZAB application until the last minute.
  • Submitting a Pearson English result to the German mission in India.
  • Underestimating living costs and running out of money by month six.
  • Paying agents who promise a job.

Preparing for German interviews with MinTraq

The Opportunity Card gives you time, and how you use it decides the outcome. MinTraq helps you see where you stand before an employer in Germany does. You can set a Career Journey for your target role, company and city, for example a senior data engineer in Berlin. You then take assessments built for that role and level to see where you are ready and where the gaps are. For those gaps you get personalised learning, with audio you can listen to on the move. The Interview Prep Kit for a specific company covers its interview process and local pay, which helps you judge an offer against the Blue Card threshold. You can then rehearse with Mira, an interviewer you talk to, so your first German interview is not your first real practice. Start free on MinTraq.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need for the Germany Opportunity Card in 2026?

You need at least €1,091 net per month for 2026, usually shown through a blocked account or a declaration of commitment from a sponsor in Germany. A full year at that rate is €13,092. The German missions in India also expect funds for a return flight, so budget for that and for your first weeks of rent.

Can Indians work part-time on the Opportunity Card?

Yes. You can hold one or more part-time jobs totalling up to 20 hours a week while you search. You can also do trial work of up to two weeks per employer, provided it is aimed at qualified employment. Part-time earnings help, but they should not replace the savings you need to support yourself.

Is English enough for the Chancenkarte?

For the points route, English at B2 meets the basic language requirement, so you do not need German to apply. English at C1 also earns one extra point. However, German skills add more points and widen your job options considerably. Learning German to at least A2 before you travel is a practical investment.

What is the EU Blue Card salary in Germany for 2026?

The standard EU Blue Card requires a gross salary of at least €50,700 a year in 2026. For shortage occupations, IT professionals and graduates whose degree is no more than three years old, the threshold is €45,934.20. These figures change every year, so check the current amount before you negotiate.

How long is the Opportunity Card valid?

The job search card is issued for up to one year. If you find qualified work but no other residence permit fits your situation yet, it can be extended for up to two years. Most people switch to an EU Blue Card or skilled worker permit through their local foreigners authority once they sign a contract.
